Committee gives Senate Bill 1037 a do-pass recommendation; bill updates code references for Idaho State Veterans Homes

Tracy Shaner, deputy chief of the Idaho Division of Veterans Services, told the Senate State Affairs Committee that Senate Bill 1037 contains technical corrections and an updated code citation related to the succession of property for deceased residents of Idaho State Veterans Homes who have no heirs or next of kin. "I am here today in reference to Senate Bill 10 37, which consists of simple amendments and technical corrections to Idaho code section 66 9 0 6," Shaner said, adding that the changes remove obsolete language and bring the section into alignment with the Unclaimed Property Act adopted in the 2024 legislative session.

Shaner asked the committee to send the bill to the Senate floor with a do-pass recommendation. No members of the public signed up to testify. After a brief procedural exchange the committee approved the motion. "Motion by Senator Harris, seconded by Senator Adams, that Senate Bill 10 37 be sent to the Senate floor with a recommendation that it do pass," the chair announced; members responded "Aye" and the motion carried.

The bill's changes as described in testimony are limited to correcting an incorrect code reference and removing obsolete language so the veterans homes succession provision refers to the current Unclaimed Property Act (Title 14, Chapter 5). The sponsor said those edits are technical and intended to ensure the veterans homes statute functions as intended following the 2024 statutory updates.
