Panel approves bill to allow supervised experience pathway for architecture licensure

Delegate Carr presented HB 2154 and said the bill would permit applicants for architecture licensure to meet educational qualifications through a professional experience program developed by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). "The existing conventional pathway to initial architecture registration through an accredited architectural degree ... will remain unchanged," the patron said.
The bill would allow a supervised experience program under the direct supervision of a licensed architect as an alternative pathway. Paul Battaglia, executive vice president of AIA Virginia, told the subcommittee the organization supports the bill and thanked the patron and DPOR for working through language and potential issues.
The committee moved and seconded the motion to report the bill. The clerk closed the roll and announced "the bill reports 7 to 0."
Ending: The subcommittee advanced the measure without recorded opposition; DPOR and AIA Virginia said they worked on language to preserve professional standards while expanding access to licensure.
