Contractor asks Clarkdale to reduce pool setback from 10 feet to 5 feet to enable typical backyard pools

Midkiff said several nearby jurisdictions — Yavapai County, the City of Cottonwood and the City of Sedona — allow a 5-foot setback to the water’s edge and that Clarkdale’s 10-foot requirement makes it difficult for homeowners on narrow lots to install standard residential pools. He described a specific property on Main Street whose house sits 20 feet from the side-yard property line; under a 10-foot setback the homeowners would only be able to construct a narrow 5-foot-wide pool, he said.
Midkiff urged the council to consider adopting a 5-foot setback to allow small pools (for example, 10-by-20 feet) and said he has helped other municipalities adopt similar changes. The council did not take action at the meeting; the request was presented during public comment for staff and council consideration.
