Parent and student describe school support after nearly six-month separation

In a meeting transcript, a parent and their child described receiving ongoing support from their school and the wider district after the child returned home following a separation of almost six months.

The parent, identified in the transcript as a first-grade teacher, said the day they "found out he was dead" remains vivid and that school staff immediately helped with classroom coverage. "They will take care of everything. They came together that Monday, prayed right before school," the parent said, adding that the school's principal, Miss Mims, "has been a big part of his coming home. She made sure that everything was in line. She would come up and visit him all the time. So she's made this transition easy. She's handled everything."

The parent credited the district and colleagues with providing emotional and practical support. "Some people from the district reached out because I didn't think, you know, I'm just a first grade teacher. I'm new to the district, so nobody knows me. But to see the amount of support from the district was, it was beautiful," the parent said. The parent also noted informal gestures such as visits, messages and gift cards: "A lot of people have sent me, like, notes and thank you cards and, like, gift cards throughout my whole journey."

The child, who is identified in the transcript by the parent as Kobe, described returning to school as helpful. "It's been cool though. It hasn't been bad. Gives me something to do. Gives me out the house," the child said. The parent said the return to school "put a smile on my face because kids need that. He doesn't need to sit in the house."

Both speakers emphasized ongoing recovery and a gradual adjustment to daily tasks. The parent quoted the child: "He doesn't want people to feel sorry for him. He doesn't want people to feel bad for him. He doesn't care what people think about him." The parent said, "It may just look different, but you're still gonna be able to do whatever it is that you want," and described steps the child is taking to regain independence: "I'm trying to, like, learn how to feed myself... sit up by myself... move myself, like, from my bed to my chair."

The parent said the family feels reunited now that the child is home after the months apart: "Now that he's home, I feel whole. Like, I feel like our family's whole because we were separated for almost 6 months. So I feel like we are a family again." The parent closed by expressing gratitude: "I feel, like, very thankful, very grateful for everybody that has come through and helped just get better day by day."
