Shakopee celebrates spring sports: state qualifiers, academic awards and 40 college signings

Athletics director Matt Hanson presented the district's spring sports review at the June 23 board meeting, highlighting team results, individual qualifiers and academic recognitions across multiple programs.

Hanson led with the boys and girls track and field teams and the adaptive softball program, which qualified for the state tournament through a cooperative team. He noted the boys golf team posted a first-day sectional qualifying score of 301 and sent four athletes to day two of regional competition. Girls golf was described as rebuilding with improved team averages.

Baseball finished 18-5 and won the Salisbury Conference for the first time in a decade; Hanson called the team 'one of eight' to earn an All-State gold standard for combined athletic and academic performance. The softball team reported a high number of players with GPAs above 3.7 and was in contention for national academic awards.

Hanson said girls lacrosse had its first winning regular season since 2019, and boys volleyball completed an inaugural season at 23-7 with a second-place conference finish. Boys tennis had three players advance to day two of state; one player finished third after a close semifinal.

Across the athletics program Hanson said the district had six conference champions, nine programs advance to state, 40 athletes signed to play in college and one state champion, Ari Zellen. Hanson said he attended about 100 evening events during the school year and praised coaches and athletes for both on-field and academic success.

Board member Shane thanked Hanson and his staff for logistical work and for managing spring weather, state tournaments and student send-offs.
