City to discuss second public pool and budget placeholder; school-district partnership options on table

Lake Havasu City officials told attendees April 4 they will bring a discussion to the City Council about whether to proceed with planning for a second public pool. The agenda item is scheduled for the council meeting on April 8, with a more detailed budget work session discussion planned for April 10.
Mayor Cal Sheehy said the item arose from residents and swimmers who cited insufficient lap swim and team practice time at the existing aquatic center. The city placed a placeholder in the capital improvement plan for year 2 (effective July 1) to study options without committing construction dollars before the budget process.
City Manager Jessica Newton said staff have considered several alternatives: building a 25-meter pool within the aquatic center’s existing footprint (near the old splash-pad area), constructing a pool on school district property to enable school use, or another site that maximizes partnerships and usage. Newton said the city is exploring partnerships with the Lake Havasu Unified School District and other stakeholders to leverage shared use.
No cost estimates or firm site decision were announced April 4. Newton emphasized that placement, partnerships and design will affect overall cost and utility and that council will consider these tradeoffs in budget deliberations.
Council and staff said the discussions are intended to ensure best value and highest community use before moving from planning to design and construction.
