Committee advances bill clarifying autonomy and liability for nurse anesthetists

Representative Healy, representing District 15, introduced House Bill 289 to clarify the scope of practice for certified registered nurse anesthetists, commonly known as CRNAs.
Healy told the House Health and Welfare Committee that CRNAs in Idaho already deliver anesthesia independently and that the bill would codify their autonomy as advanced practice nurses and make explicit that physicians are not responsible for supervising CRNAs. Healy said facilities would remain responsible for facility-level liability and insurance; the bill shifts practitioner liability away from physicians to the CRNAs and their employers or facilities.
Committee members had no substantive objections during the introduction. Representative Erickson moved to send House Bill 289 to the floor with a due-pass recommendation; the motion carried on a voice vote and the bill was transmitted to the floor for further consideration.
No amendments were adopted during the committee introduction.
