Brian Young, the district nutrition supervisor, told the board the district received 251 recipe submissions for its National School Lunch Week contest and that the winning entry — "Riley's Famous Chicken Ramen" — will be added to the district cycle menu and served March 28.
Young said the district sent a recipe card home with every elementary student and randomly awarded five bicycles to participating students; one bike was presented that morning at Sunflower. He described the winning dish as shredded chicken with ramen noodles in a chicken broth seasoned with soy sauce, ginger, sesame oil, garlic and green onions. Young said his department of about 65 staff whittled submissions to ten finalists and then voted to choose the winner.
