Governor Bob Ferguson: Lawyers should reaffirm oath, defend rule of law

Ferguson opened by thanking the chief justice, members of the court and Washington State Bar Association president Sunitha Angeville for the opportunity to speak and said he was sorry he could not attend in person. “Being a lawyer is a true privilege and comes with a lot of responsibility and a lot of opportunity,” he said. “As you retake your oath, as an attorney, you are, of course, expressing your recommitment to our constitution and to the rule of law.”
Ferguson said that while taking the oath is always important, “right now it’s an especially important thing to do,” adding that attorneys have historically been and remain crucial to protecting the rights of state and nation. He closed by thanking the audience for reaffirming their commitments: “From one attorney to another, I just want to say thank you so much for making that commitment, in the past and reaffirming that commitment today.”
The remarks were brief and largely ceremonial, offering recognition of the professional responsibilities of lawyers rather than announcing new policy or action by the state government.
