Council forwards $200,000 Crosstown Trail design work to Oct. 21; staff aims to produce shovel-ready plans

The council voted to place a resolution authorizing the city manager to approve a public-works on-call consultant work order for phase 1 design of the Crosstown Trail on the Oct. 21 agenda. Assistant Public Works Director Aaron Nicks told the council the city has a $200,000 grant to begin design work and staff wants to produce shovel-ready plans to pursue construction funding.
Nicks described the trail scope as running from Neyland Park out to U.S. 101 with the intent that it eventually tie into park-and-ride areas and provide an alternate transportation route. Staff said crews have been cleaning debris along the corridor and will pursue design amenities; the initial concept discussed earlier included a 12-foot trail width in sections. Nicks also told the council the city secured a separate $250,000 grant for what staff described as a phase 2 segment from Wallace Neyland to the marina.
The resolution on the Oct. 21 consent/action agenda would authorize award of a work order with Keller Associates for design services and fund the first phase from the grant. A council member moved to place Resolution No. 1403-0925 on the Oct. 21 agenda; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
