Dr. Timothy Rerick, chair of the Idaho State Board of Health and Welfare and a professor at Brigham Young University–Idaho, appeared before the Senate Health and Welfare Committee for a gubernatorial reappointment interview.
Rerick described his academic work in marriage and family studies and his involvement in family policy and advocacy. He said his time on the board since 2018 included service through sensitive issues such as transgender policy questions and pandemic-era mask and vaccine debates. "Tribalism and polarization and nuance started to go out the window," he said of decision-making dynamics during COVID-19, adding that "if we really wanna make informed decisions, we need to hear all perspectives on it."
Rerick told senators the board occupies a "unique capacity" between being purely advisory and fully decision-making when it comes to rulemaking. He said clarifying that role helps board members be effective. He also described international work advising U.N. member missions on family-strengthening approaches to achieve sustainable development goals.
Committee members thanked Rerick for his service. The chair said the committee will vote on the gubernatorial reappointment at a later session; no committee vote occurred during this hearing.
