Senate education committee advances Lisa Paulus' nomination to state charter commission; members hear two other education appointees

The Idaho Senate Education Committee voted to recommend gubernatorial appointee Lisa Paulus be confirmed to the Idaho Public Charter School Commission and heard presentations from two other education appointees.
Senator Carlson moved and Senator Cook seconded a motion "to send the gubernatorial appointment of Lisa Paulus to the Idaho Public Charter School Commission with a due pass by the Senate." The motion was called, the committee voice-voted "Aye," and the chair announced the appointment recommendation would go to the Senate floor.
The committee also heard from Wallace Hedrick of Eagle, who described 41 years of experience in West Ada School District and at Meridian Technical Charter High School and said the commission should help struggling charters with training, financial and academic support while allowing high-performing charters longer renewals. Hedrick described charters as laboratories of innovation and suggested closer collaboration between charters and local districts, including using underutilized district facilities.
Former Senator Sean Keough of Sandpoint introduced himself as a current State Board of Education member and described priorities during his first term: literacy initiatives (including a dyslexia handbook and K–3 intervention funding), rising graduation and college-enrollment rates, and increased resident enrollment at public higher-education institutions. Keough said he supports facilitating dialogue between charter and traditional public schools so successful practices can be shared.
No committee vote on Hedrick's or Keough's appointments was recorded during the session; the committee said it would take up those votes at a later date.
