The Senate Education Committee voted to print RS31894, a legislative cleanup proposed by Sen. Cindy Carlson that would remove a sentence from last year’s law governing school-board public comments.
Carlson told the committee RS31894 is “basically a cleanup bill from last year” intended to clarify parameters around school-board public comment so the public can comment without allowing meetings to be taken over. “What we're looking at doing is just removing a sentence of the bill to clear it up,” Carlson said.
Senator Ward Engelking said he was concerned that removing the sentence might return meetings to a “free-for-all,” and suggested further discussion; Carlson and other senators agreed to print the request so members could review language in advance. Senator Woodward moved to print RS31894; Senator Semra seconded the motion. The motion to print carried on a voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.
Committee members indicated they would print the RS for bill drafting and return to the issue for substantive discussion at a future meeting. Carlson said she would work with interested senators and staff to “cash that out” and bring details back for debate.
