Taft council renews police military equipment policy under AB 481, 5-0 vote

The Taft City Council on Oct. 21 unanimously approved a resolution renewing Ordinance 847-22, which adopts the City of Taft Police Departmentmilitary equipment use policy required by Assembly Bill 481.
City Manager Joan told the council the police departmentsubmitted its annual military equipment use report and that the city published an invitation for community engagement in the Midway Driller, on the city website and on social media; no written or in-person public comments were received by the 5 p.m. deadline. The report under review was previously presented to the council on Sept. 2, 2025.
Mayor Pro Tem Bryant said the prior presentation was comprehensive. Councilman Chavera said the report provided extensive detail and added, "it's our Second Amendment right. We need to protect our community." Council members did not request further changes before the motion to adopt the renewing resolution was called and seconded.
The resolution also included a finding that the activity is not a project under the California Environmental Quality Act (citing the CEQA guideline references provided in the staff report). The council approved the resolution on a 5-0 roll call vote.
The action keeps the Taft Police Department policy in effect for another year as required by state law and preserves the councilrecord of review and renewal. The city noted the ordinance and supporting report remain available on the city website for public review.
