Board adopts gifts and donations policy to clarify acceptance rules

The Mabel C. Fry Public Library Board adopted a gifts and donations policy Oct. 15 that sets standards for accepting monetary and material donations and seeks to reduce staff time spent processing unsuitable gifts.
Shauna, the library director, said the library had operated without a formal donations policy for many years and that staff regularly receive items in poor condition. "You would be surprised the things that get donated to the library," Shauna said, and noted the policy borrows wording from other library systems to provide staff a clear standard for declining items that are moldy, rodent-damaged or otherwise unsuitable.
The new policy also addresses monetary donations, explains limitations on providing tax valuations for donated items and encourages donors to consult tax advisors. Board members said having a written policy will make it easier for staff to decline unsuitable donations without straining relationships with donors.
Action: The board voted (Penny Budzine, Susie Grimes, Jane Mitchell, Amy Walters, Lee Wells and Courtney Winkler in favor; Kaylene Browning absent) to adopt the gifts and donations policy as presented.
