The Mabel C. Fry Public Library Board adopted an updated collection-development policy on Oct. 15 that adds criteria for evaluating materials, addresses the rise of AI-generated content and clarifies how donated materials will be handled.
Shauna, the library director, told the board the changes add definitions and strengthen language on quality and reliability. "We would like to promote accuracy and authority," she said, and noted the policy now explicitly says the library will aim to present a wide range of viewpoints while excluding materials "found to be false, misleading, or providing misinformation." The draft also adds explicit procedures for gift books so donations follow the same selection criteria as purchased items.
Board members moved and seconded adoption of the revisions; the motion passed on roll call. No amendments were made during the meeting.
Action: Motion to approve the revised Collection Development Policy passed with votes recorded in favor by Penny Budzine, Susie Grimes, Jane Mitchell, Amy Walters, Lee Wells and Courtney Winkler; Kaylene Browning was absent.
The director said the changes respond to recent concerns about emerging information sources and ensure donated materials meet the library's selection standards.
