Kenmore honors sectional champions; district reports more than $16.8 million in scholarships awarded to graduates

Trustees recognized sectional champions from bowling, swimming and track at the July 1 meeting and the district reported scholarship awards of $5,916,050 to Kenmore East students and $10,928,184 to Kenmore West students, a combined total the administration described as more than $16.8 million.
At the July 1 organizational meeting the Kenmore Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District Board of Education recognized student-athletes who won Section 6 championships and acknowledged scholarship awards reported by guidance staff.
Athletic director Lindsay Bergman introduced the honorees, including the Kenmore boys bowling sectional champions coached by Bob Howard and individual champions named by coaches: Amelia McKinnon (swimming), Heather Malkowitz (swimming), Brady Garcia (swimming) and Nick Puma (track). Coach Bob Howard said the bowling team’s sectional champions include Dylan Hine, Will Harvill, Kyle Mancuso, Sabin Koric, Vinny Morello and others; he noted several bowlers will compete at the Junior Gold national tournament in Green Bay.
Swim coach Nate Burke described Amelia McKinnon as “only a sophomore” who holds numerous school records and praised returning swimmers who have been in varsity programs since seventh grade. He said Brady Garcia qualified this year for multiple state championship events and will attend Canisius University in the fall to compete at the Division I level.
Track coach Tim Mativier detailed Nick Puma’s accomplishments: sectional championships in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, school-record performances and multiple event qualifications at league, sectional and state levels. Mativier said Puma will compete collegiately at Brockport.
The board also reviewed scholarship totals provided in the meeting packet: Kenmore East students were awarded $5,916,050 in scholarships and Kenmore West students were awarded $10,928,184, which administration described as a combined total of more than $16.8 million awarded to graduating students this year.
The board posed for recognition photos with athletes and coaches during the meeting and publicly congratulated the students.
