Solon swears in two officers promoted from within

Solon officials on Oct. 6 swore in two officers promoted from within the Solon Police Department, Mayor [unnamed] said at the start of the City Council meeting.

The mayor said promotions from within created leadership opportunities across the department and introduced the two officers before the oath. "I probably couldn't be happier than to promote Steve Wagner into that position," the mayor said, noting Wagner's nearly 15 years with the department and calling him "an outstanding police officer" and "an amazing human being." Wagner then recited the oath: "I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution and laws of the United States and the state of Ohio," before pledging to "faithfully, honestly and impartially discharge" his duties as a lieutenant of the Solon Police Department.

The mayor said the promotion opened a second leadership slot; the mayor introduced Steven Davis and noted Davis's service with the department since about 2007. Davis repeated the oath and pledged to discharge his duties as a sergeant "to the best of my knowledge and ability."

Council members congratulated the officers during the meeting. "I'd like to congratulate Lieutenant Wagner and Sergeant Davis," Councilmember Khan said. Other council members echoed that sentiment, saying promotion from within demonstrates leadership continuity and commitment to the department.

The swearing-in took place early in the meeting and included officers' brief remarks and family introductions; the mayor and other officials described the promotions as consistent with past departmental practice of advancing qualified internal candidates.
