City staff briefed Roanoke City Council on a proposed amendment to local code sections governing partial tax exemptions for new hotel construction and for rehabilitation of existing structures converted to hotels.
Mr. Collins explained the amendment would clarify that the exemption for new construction is limited to properties located in conservation, rehabilitation or redevelopment districts, consistent with state law. "Under state law, for there to be new construction and a partial tax exemption on the new construction, for example, on vacant land, the property has to be located in a conservation rehab or redevelopment district," Collins said.
Staff said the proposed language is intended to align the city code with the state enabling statutes and to reduce ambiguity about eligibility for exemptions. Council asked no substantive questions during the briefing and staff indicated they would place the item on the Oct. 20 agenda for council consideration and adoption.
No formal vote on the ordinance was taken at the briefing; the item was referred to the Oct. 20 meeting for public consideration.
