Candidates debate free-speech limits and children's protections in public spaces

Candidates at the Washington County Republican Women forum discussed how municipal leaders should balance free speech and parental rights in public spaces.

Natalie Larson said she generally seeks out "goodness in anybody" but opposes foul language in public parks and called for civil expression. Incumbent Councilwoman Michelle Tanner said she worked with state legislators to pass measures "to protect our public spaces from adult performances and adult content that do not belong in front of our children." "There is a balance there," Tanner said, adding that she supports parental rights and wants public spaces appropriate for families.

Mayoral candidate Jimmy Hughes and other speakers said their approach is to keep the conversation open but to act if speech becomes violent or sexually explicit in family spaces. Hughes referenced a previous legal challenge the city faced while attempting to restrict certain performances in public facilities and said the city sought a standard that protects children.
