Assistant Chief Snead said officers returned fire but took cover in patrol units during the exchange, then saw the suspect move to the center median with hands raised. Officers gave commands, approached the suspect as a tactical unit, and applied handcuffs. A later investigation, the assistant chief said, found the vehicle to be stolen and additional firearms inside the vehicle.
Snead recounted the named officers involved and recommended they receive awards of valor. "While most citizens run away from harm and are scared, our guys and women run to it," Snead said while reading a synopsis of the incident. He recommended that Chief Jean Dodson, Lieutenant Jimmy Taylor, Master Patrol Officer Cheyenne Gilbert, and Patrolman Zachary Ras (names as recorded in the meeting transcript) "act above and beyond the call of duty," and therefore should receive awards of valor.
