Default judgment granted for contractor in unpaid‑work case; judge awards $15,000 plus costs

The State Court of Clayton County entered a default judgment Oct. 1 in Alfonso Brinkley v. Omar Rashad after the defendant did not appear to contest a claim for unpaid home‑renovation work.
At a bench hearing, Brinkley testified under oath about the work he performed on the property, including installing a tub, connecting hot water for a kitchen, building a subfloor and adding running water to a back unit. Brinkley told the court the unpaid balance on his complaint was $15,000.
Judge Tammy Long Hayward granted the plaintiff’s request. “The default was granted,” the judge said, and ordered payment of $15,000 plus court costs on the contract.
Brinkley told the court that the work took “probably about 6 months, 8 months off and on,” and that prior invoices had been paid for earlier phases of work. The defendant did not appear to present any defense at the hearing.
The court stated a written order would be entered; Brinkley asked to be excused after the ruling.
