CDA: Phase 2 environmental testing underway at former motor-casting site

The CDA reported it completed a Phase I assessment and has begun Phase II environmental testing — including borings and groundwater monitoring wells — on a six-acre former motor-casting site the authority has an accepted offer to sell.
The West Allis Community Development Authority reported it has an accepted offer of $800,000 for the former motor-casting parcel and has begun Phase II environmental testing after completing a Phase I assessment.
Staff told the authority the Phase II site assessment work includes 16 borings and installation of three temporary groundwater monitoring wells; the wells will be sampled about a month after installation to assess contaminants and migration. The work also covers an adjacent small parking-lot parcel the authority owns, and field work began the week of the meeting, staff said.
“The idea here is that there would be 16 borings and 3 groundwater monitoring wells,” staff said. The authority also plans geotechnical testing to determine soil qualities for future development and to identify whether special foundations or remediation would be required.
Staff described the site as a six-acre parcel with rubble and standing water in places. The authority said it has contracted Rambo (consultant) for the environmental work and will return to the CDA with a geotechnical scope once environmental testing is under way.
Ending: Staff said it will report results of the Phase II assessment to the CDA and that geotechnical testing and any remediation planning will follow as needed when the environmental report is complete.
