Transportation staff outline routing, tiering and short‑term fixes as delays continue

Transportation staff provided a detailed operational update to the Finance Committee on Oct. 20, describing steps the department has taken to reduce late arrivals and improve routing.
Miss Coleman, a district transportation leader, said the district has adjusted tiering and routing, moved driver report times earlier and removed unnecessary stops to shorten runs. “We moved a lot of the buses up 10 minutes. You’d be surprised how much 10 minutes can make a difference,” she said. Staff also reviewed GPS data, inspected vendor equipment, and asked vendors to document storm‑by‑storm performance for contracted snow removal and other services.
Staff noted some factors are outside the district’s control, including state and municipal road work (Route 80 was cited) and variability in students’ boarding times, especially for vans serving students with disabilities (harnesses and longer boarding times). Officials said they have been tweaking van routes and splitting overly long routes, and that assistant superintendents and dispatchers have visited school sites to observe arrival and dismissal flows.
Why it matters: Transportation delays affect school start times and instructional time across the district. Staff told the committee they will continue to monitor GPS data, adjust bell times and routes where feasible and coordinate with vendors and municipal public works to reduce disruptions.
