Resident urges board to terminate girls volleyball coach, cites alleged verbal abuse

David Broderick, a resident and parent, used the public-comment period on Oct. 20 to ask the board to terminate the contract of the Bethel Park girls varsity volleyball head coach, alleging a pattern of verbal abuse, humiliation, retaliatory behavior and mistreatment of student athletes.
Broderick told the board he and his wife have been closely involved with the program and described repeated incidents he said included benching players, isolating and humiliating athletes, and comments that he said caused emotional harm to students. He said several players sought counseling and that attempts to address concerns through administrative channels had been unsuccessful. He asked the board to terminate the coach’s contract and to appoint leadership that “aligns with the values of safety, respect and integrity.”
A board member reminded the speaker to avoid naming individuals during public comment and the speaker complied. The board president later acknowledged receipt of two emails from the speaker’s household and said the board had discussed the matter, in general, during the executive session earlier in the evening with administration. The board did not take any personnel action in open session on Oct. 20 and did not announce an investigation timeline during the public meeting.
