Board clears construction and equipment steps for new K–5 school; turf, furniture and technology discussed

Bethel Park School District administrators updated the board on construction progress and furniture selection for the district’s new K–5 elementary school and received board approval for project payments, change orders and related equipment contracts on Oct. 20.
The finance committee approved payment for the new K–5 elementary school project; the facilities committee approved supplemental additional service charges for the project and approved a proposal to install field turf at the high school practice field (the proposal includes a 10% contingency to cover potential drainage and related site work). The board also approved contracts with Communications Consulting, Inc., for remaining network equipment for the new elementary school, distinct from previously purchased classroom touch panels and security cameras.
Elementary-school staff and administrators described recent furniture selection activities conducted with a vendor identified as K12. Samples of student desks, teacher desks and storage units were assembled at the construction site; teachers and a group of fifth-grade students tested the furniture and provided feedback. The district plans to issue a final purchase order within about two months and has been meeting twice weekly with the vendor to finalize classroom layouts and furniture choices. Administrators said staff will receive a survey about preferences on mobility, storage and desk configuration prior to final purchase.
Construction punch‑list work at Independence Middle School (IMS) was described as ongoing; painting and finishing items remain, the district recently installed a heater in a technology room, electrical contact adjustments were made and drawings were confirmed for new dumpster enclosures. Administrators said painters are awaiting the completion of punch-list tasks before scheduling final painting.
On field turf, staff said contractors would begin turf removal Nov. 1 and, weather permitting, aim to complete installation in time for spring practice. The turf plan calls for turf from fence to fence and turf to the concrete at certain access points; an interior strip of grass along a fence line will remain where drainage features exist.
No contract dollar amounts for the change orders or the turf proposal were read into the record during open session.
The board authorized the project-related payments and contracts (all votes recorded 7–0) and directed staff to proceed with procurement and coordination per committee recommendations.
