Board approves superintendent personnel agenda; separate human-resources item fails

The Dayton Public Schools Board of Education on Oct. 14 approved the superintendent's personnel agenda and later voted on a separate human-resources item that did not carry.
Superintendent Doctor Lawrence presented a personnel agenda and asked the board to accept items listed under the superintendent's personnel recommendations. Board member Mr. Lacey moved the personnel agenda; another board member seconded. After brief questions from board members, the board voted to accept the superintendent’s personnel agenda.
Later in the meeting the superintendent presented a separate human-resources item described as “the acceptance of the human resources DE after July 10 for a vote” (language used on the dais). That motion was moved and seconded; board members debated briefly and then voted. The tally recorded during the meeting showed a majority opposed and the motion failed.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the personnel and HR items during the presentations. The superintendent and staff responded to procedural questions and committed to providing additional information when requested.
The personnel agenda accepted earlier in the meeting will be reflected in the district's personnel records; the failed HR motion will not change district employment status or policy.
