Board committee approves naming Massey Hill gymnasium for longtime coach Ronnie Luck

The auxiliary services committee approved a request by Massey Hill Classical High School on Oct. 7 to name its gymnasium the Ronnie Luck Gymnasium.
A presenter described Coach Ronnie Luck’s service to Cumberland County Schools as a teacher, coach, athletic director and assistant principal and said his legacy at Massey Hill and other local schools inspired generations of students. The school’s request asserted the dedication would be a “fitting tribute” to the coach’s leadership in athletics and education.
The committee approved the naming request by motion and second. Board members asked how long it typically takes from board approval to a school presentation or dedication and were told that the school improvement team schedules a presentation date and that the district approves the name but the local school organizes the event.
The board’s naming policy was noted during discussion: staff reminded the committee that the policy allows the school improvement team to nominate and approve names, and that “the board reserves the right to name facilities at its discretion.” The committee approved the name at today’s meeting.
