The student support services committee on Oct. 7 approved a proclamation designating November 2025 as Homeless Youth Awareness Month and heard a staff update on services for students experiencing homelessness.
Beverly Young, the district’s McKinney‑Vento specialist, described supports the district provides with social workers and community partners: transportation, food boxes, clothing and hygiene items, medical and mental‑health referrals, and referrals to community programs such as Fairview Cares Day Resource and ConnectCare through the Cumberland County Health Department and Department of Social Services. “We provide transportation, food boxes, clothing, hygiene items,” Young said, adding that the district makes referrals to coordinated‑entry programs and partner organizations to help families secure housing and services.
Staff reported that the district identified 855 students who experienced homelessness in the 2024–25 school year and emphasized ongoing follow‑up for students after graduation to support college or workforce transition when needed. The committee approved the proclamation by motion and second.
