Facilities committee reviews building reports, mold testing process and proposes vocational-area naming considerations

Board members received two related facilities updates Oct. 14: a citywide school building committee report with new project cost information and a facilities-naming update that suggested names for possible dedication.
The citywide report, the board was told, now includes more detailed cost information for completed projects and a clearer work-order and mold-testing process for vendors to follow. The district also described a districtwide survey of exterior lighting to identify inoperative fixtures and plans to coordinate tree trimming in some parking and site areas with city vendors for work that requires special equipment.
Doctor Joiner presented the facilities naming committee’s preliminary recommendations. Joiner said several individuals have been proposed for recognition in the district: past superintendents Joe Terrazi and John Dow, vocational-education leader Michael Mangillo (credited with hiring Edmund Love Jr., a long-time vocational teacher), and an existing building named for Dr. Mayo.
Joiner urged caution in repurposing a vocational wing at Hill House, saying the wing “was specifically designed for vocational education. Any other use would, undercut the ability of the vocational education program to expand at Hill House.” He recommended the board and superintendent revisit the naming policy to ensure it meets the intended goals and to formalize the recommendation process.
No formal naming decisions were made; Joiner asked staff and the board to refine the policy and the list of nominees for future consideration.
