The vehicles will replace six aging driver‑education vehicles, and the district said it typically retires driver‑education vehicles once they reach about 80,000 miles and then cycles them into other departments through the district disposal/sales process.
The presenter said the district favors Equinox SUVs because they offer more space for instruction when more than one student is in the vehicle. “You want your newer, reliable vehicles. These vehicles are majority children are in them. Right? So you want your newer reliable vehicles,” a presenter said when explaining the district’s practice.
Staff indicated the purchase is largely state funded and that the district charges a fee for ninth‑grade students who take driver education. The item was approved by motion and second in committee.
Operations staff will complete the state‑contract purchase and manage disposition of replaced vehicles through the district’s surplus/sales process.
