Lillian Poole Elementary School received a spotlight at the Paulding County School System board meeting on Sept. 16, where school leaders highlighted a recently completed renovation, new safety and front-office modifications, student engagement activities and the school’s graduate-profile initiative.
Principal Kelly Davis described the renovation as a “glow up” and said the building’s updated entrance now provides a designated parents-and-visitors area, separation between the office and public entry, and a secured entry door that must be allowed access. Davis said Poole has 455 students and 25 homerooms.
Dr. Chaffee (introduced at the meeting) framed the school’s culture around smiling faces, caring hearts and kindness and noted the school’s emphasis on preparing students for life readiness and academic progress through the district’s graduate-profile work.
Students and staff highlighted community connections and programs. Staff and older students support younger students through activities such as reading visits and flag-crew training by JROTC cadets. The school also noted that a former student, Hope Ostrander, returned as a teacher and was the school’s rookie teacher of the year last year.
Three students spoke to the board about their experiences at Poole. Madeline Walter, a first grader, said, “My favorite thing about Poole is when I get to see all the teachers and all my friends, because I feel like a family. And adventure's the funnest part.” Journey Herald, a fifth grader, told the board, “Poole has prepared me for middle school by teaching me leadership skills, accountability, and academic preparedness.” The students’ remarks were introduced and supported by Principal Davis and other school staff.
Why it matters: the presentation highlighted facility upgrades meant to improve safety and the student experience, and the graduate-profile initiative aims to document and support student readiness from kindergarten through fifth grade.
The board’s members responded with positive comments about the spotlight and wished the community a good fall break; the meeting then proceeded to consent and action items.
