Airport manager reports 2,500+ recent operations; TxDOT impact study and AWOS maintenance underway

Eric, the airport manager, told the Cleveland Airport Advisory Board on Sept. 4 that the airport recorded more than 2,500 operations in recent weeks and that TxDOT is conducting an economic‑impact study at the field.
“Since I've been here, we had over 2,500 operations for the last few weeks,” Eric said. He said TxDOT will be on site to perform an impact survey and the airport will publish a NOTAM to alert tenants; the activity will not close the airport, he added.
Eric also said the city will start a new maintenance program that includes a dedicated email address for tenants to report hanger problems and periodic inspections to catch issues earlier. He reported parts have been ordered to repair several runway-edge lights and that routine runway inspections are ongoing.
Board members raised a discrepancy between the AWOS (automated weather observing system) readings and what pilots observe at the on‑field windsock. One board member said the AWOS sometimes reports calm winds while the windsock indicates significant wind near the runway. The board noted the AWOS components are aging; an inspector previously told the board replacement parts are not available for some components and that the AOP (Airport Operating Plan) will recommend upgrading the AWOS.
Eric said a contract exists for AWOS maintenance and the FAA inspects the unit twice yearly, but the board asked staff to schedule a diagnostic and to consider relocation or calibration of the windsock to provide a more representative reading for pattern operations.
Finally, Eric said he will circulate the planned maintenance protocol and the maintenance‑reporting email to tenants after the meeting.
