Cynthia Marchetto, liaison from the Desert Recreation District, described DRD plans to expand low-cost and free fitness programming in Cathedral City during a discussion at the Oct. 6 Parks and Community Events Commission meeting.
Marchetto said DRD intends to offer a contracted gentle yoga program at parks including Century Park and Panorama Park on Saturday mornings and potentially on weekday evenings at sunset. DRD also plans other classes—"moving groove" and circuit training—at Panorama Park, Esperanza Park and Dennis Keith Soccer Park, using new outdoor workout equipment where available. She told commissioners the instructor-set fee typically runs about $50 per month for four classes; participants who cannot pay may apply to the Desert Recreation Foundation for scholarships, which can provide up to $500 of programming assistance per resident.
Commissioners asked about logistics for weekend events, including sound systems and platforms; Marchetto said DRD has an appropriate sound system and could explore portable platforms. DRD said it can rotate programs through multiple parks, survey attendance and adapt programming quarterly. Staff and DRD confirmed that hosting DRD-run programs would not impose additional city overtime or extra city-staff costs.
Commissioners were invited to specify park preferences, times and other details so DRD can package a proposal tailored to Cathedral City. Commissioners and staff discussed cross-promotion with other events (for example, youth soccer programming), community partner tables at events, and surveying attendees and nonattendees to identify times and locations that work best.
This item was discussion only; no commission action or funding decision was taken at the Oct. 6 meeting. DRD will return with program details and participation data for commission review.
