Peterson said Safe Monroe provided 2,387 hours of counseling and 230 hours of legal advocacy services from July 2024 through June 2025 to 827 individuals impacted by abuse. She said Safe Monroe provided shelter to 56 adults and children for a total of 6,304 nights and responded to more than 1,870 calls on its 24-hour crisis hotline.
Peterson described the hotline as staffed by a live, trained counselor at all hours and said Safe Monroe’s volunteer hotline positions require approximately 80 hours of training. She said Safe Monroe provides in-person support at hospitals when requested and emphasized the need for community and local government support.
Peterson encouraged community members to participate in Domestic Violence Awareness Month events and said Safe Monroe will hold a candlelight vigil in Courthouse Square later in October; she asked attendees to wear purple and directed people to safemonroe.org and the group’s Facebook page for details.
