Monroe County proclaims October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month; Safe Monroe urges community support

The proclamation cites services delivered by Safe Monroe (formerly Women’s Resources) from July 2024 through June 2025: 2,387 hours of counseling, 230 hours of legal advocacy to 827 individuals, shelter to 56 adults and children for a combined 6,304 nights, and responses to more than 1,870 calls through a 24‑hour crisis hotline. The proclamation text emphasized the county’s recognition of the need for prevention and support for survivors.
"I can speak till I'm blue in the face about the work that Safe Monroe does and the people that we help," said Lauren Peterson, executive director of Safe Monroe. "We are truly a 24 hour, 7 days a week. We don't take holidays. Domestic violence doesn't take a holiday. We have that 24 hour hotline and it really is. You will get a live person."
Peterson described volunteer and staffing needs for the hotline and said the volunteer training requirement for hotline work is about 80 hours. She also invited the public to the organization’s events for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, including a candlelight vigil on Oct. 23 at Courthouse Square (also designated Purple Thursday). The proclamation was presented and approved by the commissioners; names appearing on the proclamation include John D. Christie, David C. Parker and Sharon S. Labrador.
The board and the nonprofit urged continued community support for survivors and appreciation for advocates and service providers working on prevention and response.
