Staff explained the Simmons Middle School band overload has been run for several years to avoid pulling students out of non-core band instruction for reading interventions; the overload adds a period so students can receive reading support without missing band. For special-education support, staff described the need for 1-to-1 aides when a student’s Individualized Education Program requires dedicated assistance; the presentation cited at least two requests (one for the high school and one for Oldham Park Elementary) and said the district is required to provide mandated services under students’ IEPs.
On administrative procedures, staff said the district has broadly written board policies and that the proposed IASB project would translate those policies into practical procedures for building administrators. The IASB partnership was presented as an efficiency measure: staff said IASB would provide a draft procedures manual tied to board policy, and a district team of administrators would review and adapt the draft for local use. Staff noted IASB accepts only a small number of districts for this project and that the district had been on an IASB waiting list; staff said they recently were notified they secured one of the limited slots.
Administrators said these operational items will be placed on the full-board agenda for formal action. No motions or votes were recorded at this committee meeting. The presentation also included brief acknowledgements of recent community donations of school supplies and musical instruments from local organizations and churches, and a $500 donation from the Aurora Lions Club Foundation to East Aurora High School noted by staff.
