Residents urge county coordination on Ted Sperling Park boating, push for underground power and warn downtown parking loss

Four residents addressed the commission during the public-comment period on Oct. 6 with concerns spanning park safety, utility reliability and downtown parking.
David Rayner identified himself as a city resident and said he supports coordination between the city and county on “boat anchoring and jet skis,” citing police incident counts at Ted Sperling Park and noting petition signatures from area residents. Celine O’Connor, a full-time resident near South Lido Beach, said the park is owned by Sarasota County and urged the city to keep working with the county and County Commissioner Smith to strengthen waterway ordinances and interlocal agreements; she also urged faster work with Florida Power & Light to underground lines on the barrier island after recent damaging surges.
John Simon said event noise and the cumulative effect of multiple concerts and festivals are troubling for downtown residents, asking event staff to consider cumulative noise when scheduling. Harmony Cruising, a downtown merchant, urged commissioners to rethink a downtown streetscape proposal that would remove more than 100 parking spaces and said merchants are alarmed about potential loss of local customers and construction impacts.
No formal action was taken; commissioners and staff acknowledged the comments and directed relevant staff to follow up as appropriate.
