Berwick Area SD wins Degenstein grant to buy advanced simulation manikins for high-school medical program

The Berwick Area SD superintendent reported the district received a grant from the Degenstein Foundation to purchase two advanced medical simulation manikins for use in the high-school program currently described as sports medicine.
The superintendent told the board the devices — described in meeting remarks as advanced resuscitation mannequins that emulate medical conditions such as failed lungs and collapsed lungs — cost roughly $40,000 to $45,000 each. “These are a lot more advanced. They're about 45,000 or $40,000 a piece,” the superintendent said, and added the district received in excess of $85,000 for two units.
The superintendent said the items would be on the board’s agenda next month for formal acceptance of the grant award and that staff would use the equipment in a program the superintendent suggested renaming from “sports medicine” to “medical science” to reflect more of the curriculum the equipment will support.
No vote on accepting the grant took place at Monday’s meeting; the superintendent said the formal acceptance would be on next month’s agenda.
