Officials preview VDOE performance projections; district expects most schools to be “On Track” or “Distinguished”
Summary
Superintendent’s office and assessment staff previewed new Virginia Department of Education performance-designation calculations; preliminary district projections show several schools expected to earn "Distinguished" designations while others are projected as "On Track." Final published scores were expected from VDOE the following week.
District assessment staff on Oct. 7 previewed school performance projections under the new Virginia Department of Education performance-and-support framework, which separates mastery, growth and readiness measures and assigns summative designations.
Ross Miller (assessment and accountability lead) told the board the framework weights mastery, growth and readiness differently at elementary, middle and high school levels and that the state will publish final designations in the coming days. Miller presented preliminary district projections: George Watkins Elementary was shown at about 94.28 points (projected "Distinguished"), New Kent High was projected around 93.43 points (projected "Distinguished"), Quentin Elementary was projected above 90 (Distinguished), and New Kent Elementary and New Kent Middle were projected in the high 80s ("On Track" in most scenarios). Miller cautioned these were working figures and that subgroup math in the final calculation can affect a school’s final designation.
Board members and staff discussed how readiness measures at the high school level incorporate a three-part "Readiness for Life" framework (enrollment, employment and enlistment indicators), how the ASVAB is being used for career-pathway readiness and how the district plans to increase CTE completers and dual-enrollment opportunities to strengthen readiness scores.
Miller emphasized the numbers were preliminary and said the state’s official release was expected the next week; district staff will update the board when final figures are posted.
