Safe Schools report: Highlands County had six inspections and two minor findings last year, safety official says

John Verity, Highlands County School District safety and security official, presented the district's Safe Schools quarterly compliance update at the meeting.
Verity said that, by statute, safety specialists must present inspection schedules and findings each quarter and that the state Office of Safe Schools recently gave guidance requiring a review of the previous school year's quarterly data. He reported that last school year the district recorded zero inspections in quarter one, two inspections (one noncompliant finding) in quarter two, four inspections (one noncompliant finding) in quarter three and zero inspections in quarter four — six inspections and two minor findings overall.
Verity told the board the district received an informal tour from the state compliance director and a state compliance officer this quarter; the visitors toured a few campuses, provided "talk throughs" of changing rules for exclusion zones and CTE exemptions, and gave positive feedback on district practices. "We got some good feedback, and they were impressed with some of the things that we had in place across the district," Verity said.
The presentation was informational; no board action was required. Verity said quarterly reports will continue this school year and that the district would formally present the first-quarter data at an upcoming meeting.
