Commissioners approve nonprofit funding contracts after debate over wildlife organization

Wakulla County commissioners approved several nonprofit funding agreements included on the consent agenda after brief debate about whether taxpayer funding should support certain organizations.
Commissioner Thomas said he would not support county funds for the Wild Mammal Association and proposed approving the other listed agreements separately. "They do a great job, I appreciate everything they're doing, but I just don't think we should be committing taxpayers funds to that," Thomas said. He moved to approve contracts for North Florida Medical (already approved previously during the meeting), Capital Medical Society, Wakulla County Senior Citizen Council and Keep Wakulla Beautiful while excluding the Wild Mammal Association.
The motion did not receive a second. The board ultimately approved the nonprofit funding agreements as listed on the agenda by a 4-1 tally, with one commissioner voting no.
Staff clarified that the funding for the nonprofits was included in the county's adopted budget and that the contracts under consideration this evening were the execution of those budgeted allocations. The county administrator and staff explained that North Florida Medical had been previously approved under an earlier agreement.
Outcome: the board approved the nonprofit funding contracts; the record shows debate on using taxpayer funds for the Wild Mammal Association but no formal change to the list of awardees.
