City staff announced several upcoming community events and routine programs during the special Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
The Festival of Frights and Car-tober Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. in downtown West Covina. Staff asked commissioners who wish to participate in the opening ceremony to arrive by 3:45 p.m. Activities noted by staff include a costume contest, a kids zone with inflatables and crafts, a haunted house, trick-or-treat stops at participating downtown businesses (estimated about 10 businesses), a Santana tribute band performing from 7–9 p.m., and a car show coordinated with the West Covina Kiwanis Club (staff reported approximately 50 vehicles registered). The Kiwanis area will also include a Bloodmobile.
Staff also reminded the commission that a farmers market operates every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the city is working to expand the market. The food pantry and distribution at Cameron Park is scheduled for the last Saturday of every month beginning at 8 a.m. The commission was also told the Veterans Day ceremony will be held on Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the city courtyard, followed by lunch and a small token of appreciation for veterans.
Why this matters: these events are city-organized or city-supported programs that provide recreational, cultural and support services to residents and will affect downtown traffic and use of public spaces on event dates.
