PD Coalition urges county to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month; council approves proclamation

Stacy Short, Chesterfield County service coordinator and counselor with PD Coalition, told council members the county has continued high levels of domestic violence and outlined outreach planned for October, which the council recognized with a proclamation.
Short said PD Coalition served 50 victims who came into its crisis center between July 2024 and June 2025, and the sheriff’s office and municipal police departments submitted about 135 incident reports during that period. She said 85 children have received services through regional centers and that her organization has delivered roughly 102 educational presentations countywide over the past year.
Short described several October activities: a “walk” on Oct. 16 beginning at Sandhills Medical Facility in McBee, a booth and participation at a community event at Arrowhead Park coordinated with PD Union Baptist Church, a presentation at PD Union Baptist on Oct. 19, and a simulation program called In Her Shoes on Oct. 17 intended to help participants understand the systems victims must navigate. She encouraged councilors and residents to attend and said coalition resources and flyers would be left at the council table.
Council approved a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month after a motion and second; the vote was by voice and passed unanimously.
Why it matters: PD Coalition staff described continuing demand for crisis and prevention services and sought community partnership for outreach and trauma-informed responses. Short urged school- and church-based prevention efforts and cross-sector coordination.
