Board authorizes grant applications for Ambrose River outdoor classroom and Centennial regional trail segment

The Carson City Board of Supervisors unanimously authorized submittal of two grant applications for trail and outdoor‑education projects and authorized the director to accept awards and sign necessary documents if funds are awarded.

Trails coordinator Greg Bergeran described the Ambrose Carson River Outdoor Classroom and Trailhead proposal, which would add an ADA‑accessible vault toilet, two ADA parking spaces, a 150‑foot accessible pathway, interpretive panels and a kiosk at the Ambrose Carson River Natural Area between the east side of the Carson River and Derren Road. The site was identified in the city’s river planning outreach and was recommended for amenities and educational use; the coordinator said the project would be above floodplain and includes community and agency support.

Staff also presented the Centennial Regional Trails Project, an approximately three‑mile segment that would connect to existing roads/trails and ultimately link Centennial Park to Washoe Lake State Park and other points. Bergeran said partners include Muscle Powered, the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of State Parks and Washoe County; BLM lead work on NEPA and historic‑resource clearances is underway. Bergeran noted complementary local initiatives such as a conceptual bike park and said prior quality‑of‑life funds had been used to match projects on non‑city lands.

Supervisor comments were supportive. A motion to authorize submission of both grant applications and to authorize the director to accept awards was made, seconded and approved unanimously.
