Local teacher urges Youth Commission to push to activate installed red‑light cameras, promotes Safe Streets event

“Currently, they're just sitting there unused, and we really think that, after speaking with Lola and Quaid, it's something that I'm hoping that we can get some support with, especially coming from the youth, young drivers, and just advocating for your safety,” Sharbarth said during public comment. She described activation of the cameras as a potentially lower‑cost, faster action than larger infrastructure changes and framed it as a public‑safety measure.
Sharbarth also invited commissioners to a Safe Streets community event on Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at Encinitas Community Park. She suggested youth involvement could help advocate for turning the cameras on and for broader traffic-safety measures.
Her remarks were part of the meeting’s public‑comment period; the commission did not take formal action on the request during the Oct. 1 meeting.
