UW Extension staffing changes and UWSP Wausau campus transition outlined; county planning for campus handover begins

Representatives from UW Extension and the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point (UWSP) updated the committee on local staffing changes and the campus transition to Northcentral Technical College (NTC).
Jason Houser (dean's office, UW Extension) said area director Patrick Gatterman has left and Mallory McGivern will serve in an interim capacity; the university will recruit a new area director and prioritize maintaining local educators. Houser said Extension remains committed to local programming and administrative changes will be made to preserve on-the-ground services while seeking efficiencies in administrative functions.
On programming, Extension staff highlighted ongoing work with Hmong producers — including a public Wisconsin Mung Growers Facebook group that shares translated educational materials — and described a planned regional housing summit coordinated with community-development educators in adjacent counties.
Miranda (UWSP) described implementation teams formed to manage the academic and operational transition as UWSP relocates programming to NTC. Miranda said UWSP enrollment is reported at 8,556 systemwide, with 239 students attending classes on the Wausau campus and 79 first-year Wausau students; retention from last fall to this fall is up 0.5% systemwide. She said she is leading the campus-exit implementation team and will provide ongoing updates.
County supervisors asked about the timeline and process for decisions about the county-owned buildings currently occupied by UWSP. Supervisors said the county needs to understand possible options and a decision process because capital and operating implications could affect the 2027 budget. Committee members discussed joint meetings with HR Finance and Property to clarify timelines and information needs; Miranda and county staff agreed to provide frequent updates as plans develop.
No formal action was taken; the presentations were informational and committee members requested further coordination and process development for campus disposition and community engagement.
