Cook described multiple arrests and notable incidents: a vehicle pursuit and arrest after a crash on Waverly Road; large fights at a Waverly High School football game that resulted in deputy injuries and charges referred to the prosecutor; a domestic assault arrest in a Delta Township parking lot; recovery of a stolen, loaded handgun in a traffic stop; and a Goodwill larceny where detectives recovered a stolen scooter by arranging a buy-and-arrest operation.
He said deputies also arrested a suspect who brandished a firearm on I-96 at Millet Highway and a separate case in which a man threatened a supervisor while waving a machete in the 7500 block of West Saginaw Highway. Cook described a multi-vehicle break-in series in Yellowwood/North Canal that led to juvenile arrests and recovery of stolen property. He noted a pattern of Kia vehicles being targeted in vehicle-theft incidents and said local prosecutors were seeing similar trends.
Cook credited Deputy Lane’s drone operation with locating a person in a cornfield after a crash and said Deputy Studley broke a car window to rescue an infant left with windows closed; the child was transported to Sparrow Hospital with heat exhaustion. Cook emphasized that neither deputy was significantly injured in confrontations during September.
Cook closed by providing counts: deputies were dispatched to over 60 retail fraud/theft calls at businesses in September and responded to over 40 domestic disputes. Committee members asked whether the domestic-disturbance total was above average; Cook said September appeared higher than typical monthly levels.
No committee action was taken on the report; commissioners asked clarifying questions about trends and jurisdictional issues discussed later in the meeting.
