Riverton acquires triangle parcel; council discusses BMX park idea, rezoning and funding options

Riverton officials said the city now holds title to a triangular parcel near Mountain View Park but that the parcel lies inside the municipal boundaries of Herriman City. At the work session, councilmembers discussed recreational uses, rezoning, and funding options including a potential application to the Utah Recreational Trails and Conservation Commission (TRCC).

City staff reported that conversations with Herriman indicated support for using the parcel as open or park space but that a formal rezoning (in Herriman) would be required for park development because the land is currently zoned residential. Staff said the city had earlier explored TRCC funding for a park on the site but had not secured the grant. City staff offered to perform feasibility and cost analyses and to add the project to Riverton’s long‑range plan for future budget consideration.

Council member Perucci, whose district includes the area, expressed support for a BMX or mountain‑bike park and said UDOT’s executive director had signaled interest in marking a future opening. Council members raised access and parking questions; staff said the north end of Mountain View Park offers parking and that the parcel could be accessed from that point but lacks permanent restrooms. Council member McDougall said the project should be considered alongside broader transportation and budgeting priorities such as safe walking paths and school‑bus routing and suggested exploring regional partnerships with Herriman or the county.

Council member Broker suggested considering design features that allow park use by Herriman and Riverton residents and noted the potential to design the facility for regional use. Staff said next steps would include confirming current zoning and working with Herriman on rezone and use agreements, feasibility and cost estimates, and pursuing potential TRCC or other grant funding. No formal vote was taken; councilmembers asked staff to return with analysis and budget options for a subsequent strategic or budget session.
