Trustees hear progress report on Sigueroa campus; traffic, drop-off and future canopy remain open issues

Laredo ISD staff told trustees Monday that construction at the new Sigueroa campus is advancing, but trustees pressed for coordinated plans on traffic and pedestrian access on both sides of the site before students move in.
A project representative told trustees the district received partial building final approval that day and that the fire department would conduct its inspection the following day. Site work updates included drainage modifications, traffic coordination for a median and traffic signals, and ongoing installation of the football-field irrigation system with seeding to follow. "We received partial building final approval today, and the fire department will be conducting their fire inspection tomorrow," the project representative said.
Trustees and staff reviewed renderings and site photos showing the student drop-off loop, ramps, stairs and accessible routes. Board members asked about the absence of permanent coverings at drop-off points; staff said canopy or shade features were in the original drawings but were removed from the current budget and remain possible additions for future bonds or capital improvements. "On the set of drawings, we do have a feature to cover that…we already have drawings of in the future, like, maybe on a different bond or a capital improvement," a staff member said.
Trustees raised concerns about traffic and pedestrian access on the campus’ other side (references made to Loma Del Sur and Hidalgo/Iqido in the discussion). District staff said budget limits constrained current scope and that some adjacent parcels and sidewalks lie on property not owned by the district; staff reported the city’s willingness to meet and asked trustees to provide an agenda for those discussions. Staff also committed to provide an estimate of costs to add pedestrian improvements on the other side of the site.
No formal action was taken. Trustees asked staff to schedule a site visit, pursue a meeting with city traffic officials, include campus safety (police) in planning and return with cost estimates for the pedestrian/sidewalk work that lies outside district property.
